The Mississippi state legislature established the Mississippi Lottery in 2018 after a contentious senate vote. Lawmakers decided to approve the lottery after realizing its potential to generate millions in revenue for state programs.
Tickets sales launched late in 2019 with scratch-off games. Since then, the lottery’s portfolio includes Mega Millions, Powerball, Cash 3, Cash 4, and Match 5.
Profits from ticket sales benefit infrastructure and education in the state. Until June 30, 2028, the first $80 million in lottery proceeds per fiscal year will be to be used for transportation improvements. Additional funds will then be directed into the Educational Enhancement Fund.
