The DC Lottery was launched in 1982. and it made $3.5 million in tickets during its first week. The first game was called Match 3, and all 10 million tickets sold out in a few days. The DC Lottery is one of the founding members of the Multi-State Lottery. In 1987, the group launched Lotto America (now Powerball). The District of Columbia then added Mega Millions draws in 2010.

Since its inception, the DC Lottery has contributed to the district's general fund, which provides for recreational spaces and services for minors and the elderly. In the District of Columbia, players must be 18 or older to purchase lottery tickets, but minors may receive lottery tickets and claim prizes if the ticket is a gift.
